Friends by Sanjiva Wijesinha
Friends is a collection of delightful essays, reflections and short stories written by Suite 101 Feature Writer and Monash University professor Sanjiva Wijesinha.
The stories are all about friends, friendship and those nostalgic days of childhood and youth when "life was young and oh so mellow".
These are heartwarming tales that take the reader back to those good old days (when perhaps we were not so good and not so old!) during which all of us had time to laugh and there was so much for us to laugh about.
Enjoy the tale entitled The Republic of Amnesia about Uncle Tarzan and his fear of cholera vaccinations, as well as the beautiful story The Illusion of Permanence about the soldier who became a Buddhist monk.
There are nearly sixty such stories, each a few pages long so you can enjoy them in stages. You will laugh out loud reading about Gordie and the Pope, be amused by the tale of how two little schoolboys (actually the author and his pal Tiny) tried to use a horseshoe to kill their math teacher - and sympathise (or empathise) with Randy who had "One Drink too Many".
Sanjiva has drawn on his years as an army medical officer, paediatric surgeon and university professor to produce a heart warming anthology.
I can only recommend the book to you - and I dare say that you will enjoy it so much that you will even recommend it to your own friends!
