Voices of Yesterday
Our Review
Voices of Yesterday by Michael Yarwood tells the horrific saga of the Jewish fighters battling against the German Waffen SS to escape the walled ghetto in Warsaw where they are imprisoned and awaiting deportation.
The underground movement forestall the enemy many times during the oppression in 1942-43 and although they were suppressed and starving, their fighting spirit never failed them.
With daily executions and deportations the fighters foiled many SS attacks by using underground bunkers and home-made weapons.
It’s a great story of the Jewish uprising and one that should be a story and not reality. We see some real characters of strength amongst the Jewish fighters many of whom plan their escape through the rat-infested sewers.
The novel is based loosely on fact and makes an enlightening read, though not a pleasant subject, it was emotionally challenging at times knowing that it really happened.
Unfortunately there are many grammatical errors and at times missing words that make it quite difficult to follow, but it is nevertheless an interesting read.
